Used a dragon fire sword or whatever it was called. I wasn't super spec'd or anything, I just found his attacks fairly easy to dodge. Though, as the OP mentioned, walking to him wasn't fun. I could never really get how to sneak past the dragon, ended up using that NPC to distract him, run under him, and throw kunai into his chin until he was poisoned and then shot a lot of arrows into his chin.
I am having huge problems with Gwyn, tried at least 30 times so fat and I only got a dent in him. I hope anyone has any tips for me because it is getting really annoying. There are, in general, four types: a missed parry, an unsuccessful parry, a semi-successful parry, and a perfect parry.
A missed parry occurs when the player's parry "window" the frames of the parry animation which actually serve to deflect an incoming attack are completely mistimed and do not make contact with the incoming attack.

Almost every enemy that can be parried can also be riposted. The Berenike Knights are the only exception to this rule. However, he is a player type enemy, which means you can fight him the same as any player. With careful play and patience, one can bring it down eventually. If you are absolutely sick of Old King Allant, there is a method to kill him without even fighting him.
However, this method is extremely time consuming. You must parry just as the enemy attack hits.
