The Coat of Arms was granted in by Royal warrant to Jamaica. The design was originally made by William Sancroft who was then the Archbishop of Canterbury. Modifications made in , and were however the most significant changes to the design of this Coat of Arms. The Coat of Arms in use today was therefore the version adopted in when Jamaica gained its independence. Resting on top of the helmet is the Jamaican crocodile. The Escutcheon or shield consists of a cross within which five golden pineapples are placed.
On either side of the shield emblem, and standing as supporters, are a male and female member of the Taino people, the first inhabitants of Jamaica.
